BySLAM DEFEAT MISSOURI PHOENIX IN LAST REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME
The St. Louis SLAM women’s full contact football team hosted the Missouri Phoenix on Saturday at Oakville High School and picked up their sixth win of the season in a 51-0 shutout. The SLAM came out on fire, jumping to a huge lead in the first half. The Phoenix stepped up their game in the second half, but was unable to put points on the board against the SLAM’s defense, one of the top defensive units in the league this year.
Rookie wide receiver, Kate Evers, led the air attack with 86 yards on 4 receptions and two TDs. Evers also added another TD on a 58 yard punt return. Quarterback, Liz Lacy, threw for 117 yards on the day, and a third passing TD to wide receiver, Gail Graff (3 rec., 26 yards, 1 TD). Veteran running back, Pat Riggins, led the ground attack with 77 rushing yards on 9 carries and 1 TD. Katie Ode added two 2-point conversions and 3 extra points on special teams to round out the SLAM offensive attack.
The SLAM defense posted its fourth shutout of the season against the Phoenix and scored two TDs in the game. Linebacker, Kelly Kozlen recovered an attempted pitch by Missouri and returned it 39 yards for a score. Defensive end, Elizabeth Williams, added another TD after hurdling a teammate to return a fumble 23 yards to the end zone. Strong safety Laure “Frenchy” Gelis-Diaz continued her excellent 2009 season with 4 tackles and an interception.
The SLAM take on the Iowa Thunder next Saturday, June 27, on the road in the final regular season game of the season. Playoff dates for the SLAM home playoff games are not yet available.
